What We Considered
A leather jacket is one of those items that can instantly change the way you feel about yourself (like a good red lipstick or a killer pair of heels). Maybe it’s because we associate leather jackets with general badass-ery, but just the simple act of throwing one on over an outfit makes us feel like we can take on just about anything and anyone. The only thing holding us back from experiencing this level of confidence and empowerment? Finding an affordable leather jacket is not easy — until now, that is.
We've found three brands that are designing high-quality leather jackets, without the traditional markup associated with leather. We're talking less than $600 for most styles, which is half of what the typical retail price is. Sure, this is still an investment piece you save up for, but at least it's a dream that's a bit more achievable now. Price isn't the only thing that makes these brands worth mentioning, and we're taking a look into the quality of the product and the mission behind these brands as well.
You probably already know of DSTLD for their premium denim goods, but this LA-based company also makes leather jackets with the same level of care and expertise they bring to their denim. The leather jacket collection consists of two styles — the Biker Jacket and the Moto Jacket — that are made from the softest leather they could find and carefully constructed for long-lasting wear. Even though the colorways are limited to mostly black, with one navy leather option, we kind of love this level of minimalism. There's nothing more iconic that a black leather jacket, so do we even need other options? Starting at only $350, these jackets are the most affordable on our list, but the quality and workmanship are on the same level as luxury designer brands. We would never recommend something just because it’s cheap!
NYC-based The Arrivals has been called the Warby Parker of outerwear. What does that even mean? To put it simply, it means we can expect quality, stylish, direct-to-consumer products at affordable prices. The Arrivals arrived on the scene (pun fully intended) in 2014 and has since established itself as the cool new kid on the block with it's ultra-modern and stylish takes on outerwear. They take their outwear seriously, and everything, even the leather jackets, are rated on their Heat Retention Index (HRI). No more unpleasant surprises when your brand-new jacket that looked super warm does nothing to protect you from the latest Polar Vortex. Not only are the leather jackets stunning, but The Arrivals also makes it a point to work with manufacturers that meet a certain level of standard when it comes to quality and business practices.
LTH is focused on one thing — inspiring a more confident world by making the iconic leather jacket more accessible to everyone. The brand sells both women's and men's jackets made from super-soft, buttery leather and starting at $595. The women's Core Collection is made up of five seasonless staples that will never go out of style. The KAS jacket is a minimal take on a classic biker jacket, crafted from natural lambskin that's designed to mold to your body and soften over time (can our entire wardrobe consist of clothes like this?). The MYA jacket has the more traditional elements of a biker jacket, like shoulder epaulets, hardware, and a belted waist, but with a more cropped and feminine shape. With a good mix of neutrals and more adventurous colors like mauve and Ceylon yellow, there's an LTH JKT for everyone.
